When export packing needs a corrosion plan
Any ferrous or sensitive machined surface that will sit in a container for weeks deserves a written packing method. Cosmetic aluminium and stainless still benefit from clean handling and moisture control.
Specify a packing method when you have:
- Ferrous parts with machined finishes heading overseas
- Long ocean transit or unknown warehouse dwell time
- Parts that cannot tolerate surface rust before assembly
- Mixed metal kits sharing one crate
- Customer packaging standards (automotive / industrial)
- Need to open crates for customs without destroying protection

Seven elements of a robust export pack
1. Clean and dry start
Chips, coolant and fingerprints are removed before inhibitors go on.
2. Contact inhibitor
Anti-rust oil or VCI paper on ferrous surfaces as specified.
3. VCI film barrier
Sealed bags or wraps that release vapour-phase protection inside the pack.
4. Desiccant load
Sized for crate volume and transit climate.
5. Cushion and segregate
Nests or dividers stop metal-to-metal rub that breaks films.
6. Label the method
Receiving sees VCI / oil notes before they open every bag.
7. Photo record
Pack-out photos support claims and continuous improvement.

VCI and oil are complementary, not interchangeable. Oil alone fails when film is wiped in handling; VCI alone fails if parts enter the bag wet or dirty.
